This is our friend Sergey M. He is a college student in the northern city of Kharkov and we get the entertaining honor of chatting with him on Skype at least once a day. If you haven't met Sergey, I don't think I can describe him for you . Today he was showing us the picture from the front of the t-shirt he just bought on the internet from the US and this is the image we recieved...
Anyone have any idea on this one? I think it's funny either way.

ReplyDeleteif you want a shirt that is sure to raise eyebrows over there, go on the whoareyadesigns.com page (the new supplier of shirts for WSD) and get the CCCFC shirt with the old CCCP logo replaced with celery. I don't think they would find it especially funny, but I did.

I'm that Sergey and actually i didn't know what sign on my shirt mean when i chose it, but now i know that my shirt will be the best in UKRAINE and KHARKOV and KERCH:)

Just google the term shiksas and read the first 3 search results. I personally would be concerned that it MAY offensive to some Jews or that I would be assumed to be Jewish. However, I don't know what the culture and attitude over there is considering the Star of David, Jews, etc. I just think you need to look it up and know what you're wearing before you do. If you do look it up and it's ok with you, enjoy your new purchase!
ReplyDeleteI checked it out and shiksa is a mildly derogatory Hebrew/Yiddish term for non-jewish women (used by Jewish women), generally applied to those who are dating or are married to successful Jewish men. The star of David is a stand in for the heart making is a double joke.

so basically, it is the Jewish word for gold-digger? If so, then I think it is great, due to my dislike for gold-digging women in general.
ReplyDeleteYeah. It makes it really funny when you consider that Sergey isn't Jewish but it openly stating that he loves non-Jewish (though not exclusively) women. Not a very controversial stance...

ReplyDeleteActually, the more I think about it...it would be more like the reverse. It would be like me wearing a "I'm Black and I love (insert mildly offensive term black men use to describe Mexican women) women". Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

Naaah not quite that offensive. He is more saying he loves people who are not of a group, which is different than saying ones that are -- especially if it is an economic basis as Matty proposed. The only people offended by that would be the women who try and hook up with rich Jewish men, and I personally can't be bothered with their overdeveloped sense of pseudo-morality. It would be like me being concerned about offending the women of less than moral repute who hang around the MLB All-Star game. And believe me, that is the nice, g-rated version of how they are usually described ;-)

It would be like a man of some ethnicity (Black, Asian, Hispanic, etc.) wearing a shirt proclaiming their love for women of their ethnicity with the added implication that those women were somewhat shallow in their attraction to some other ethnicity......this is getting too confusing, because the shirt is designed to be worn by Jewish men as a subtle jab at Jewish women (ei. I like the type of women that you dislike), but Sergey will wear it as goyem.
Long story short; I don't think that even were it seen by a Jewish person in Kharkov or Kiev there would be offense taken. The term is derogatory towards non-Jews so either it is making fun of someone else (goyem) or you don't know what the term means.
Additionally, I think it's a uniquely American Jewish term written in English with Latin letters making it nearly incomprehensible to most Ukrainian Jews.
The only issue might be with someone understanding only the Star of David and assuming it was offensive, but I still will not be able to convince Sergey not to wear it - it's a moot point.
Enough said.....comment on something else.
Oh, on the Shakhtar front....I think WAYD only does EPL teams and if they did UPL, I wouldn't know what to tell them as I am oblivious to the teams culture.

ReplyDeleteI think we can both agree that this shirt on its own says "I'm Jewish and I like non-Jewish women". The part we'll have to agree to disagree on is whether or not this term/saying or this term/saying worn by a non-Jew could be seen as offensive by some people. I'll leave it alone and give you the last word...sorry to add confusion to it, even if the confusion doesn't change my original point.
Well they have shot in some SPL stuff (some great Rangers/Celtic stuff) but they have a bit that says if you have a design they might do it! Who knows!!!
ReplyDeleteIf it were in my budget, I would do the CCCFC (and I am not even a Chelsea fan) or the one with the rat. I know Grandma wouldn't approve, but that one just makes me laugh! I like even more that they explain what the shirts mean -- very helpful for people like me! I sent Aaron a link to a Spurs one that he should get!
