I need some help, people. My older sis is in trouble and could use some expertise. Is it legal advice she seeks? Of course not, she's a lawyer! Medical? No, she has her bachelors degree in sports medicine. What she really needs is a movie dork that can tell her the origin of the following quote:
"So what are you going to do, spoon me to death?"
Any ideas? I know that at least 2 of you out there know movie lines better than your family's birthdays, so lets figure this one out.

The Whole Nine Yards has been suggested repeatedly, but no one can seem to pull up the scene to confirm. If I had it, I would!!
ReplyDeleteOddly enough, Mystery Men and Aladdin were also suggested.....in the interest of full disclosure, no one knows for sure that it isn't in more than one movie either, just that no one can actually place it!!!

ReplyDeleteI just checked my traffic flow and if it keeps up where it is, I will have more visitors this month than the previous 12 combined. Between search engines finding my posts and actual visitors, I get something between 200 and 500 hits a day now. I guess some of them watch too many animated films.

ReplyDeleteThe really funny thing is that I am now getting about 50 hits an hour by people looking for the source of that movie quote! It's apparently a highly sought answer.
Can anyone actually give the context in which the line is delivered in any of the 3 suggested flicks?
No matter which movie that people swear that it is from, even the people who think it is from an episode of Friends, seem to concur that it happens as follows:
ReplyDeleteTwo people are in a room, likely a kitchen, and they are either preparing to fight each other or someone else. Person A picks up a spoon allegedly as a weapon, and Person B makes the sarcastic comment regarding spooning someone to death.
To explain where this came from, I was listening to my radio station back in LA, and the guy that does showbiz news started talking about it. He is a veritable wealth of information on movie quotes, so this girl asked him about the quote. Apparently, this came up with her family at Thanksgiving dinner, and they have been trying to figure out which movie it was from ever since. There is even a facebook group devoted to figuring it out.
So that's the background, and it started annoying me as well because it is so familiar and I can't come up with the movie.
So thanks, all you random cyber-stalkers who are visiting the site and chipping in!
Since I had nothing better to do tonight I scoured every last page of Google. Well, at least until it was time to go to bed.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I gathered this was a question posed by a girl who called into KROQ (LA radio station) because they had some movie trivia/quote genius on the show. Her and her family couldn't remember what the quote was from so she was asking for help. He didn't know the answer and no one has been able to figure this out since Thanksgiving. Google doesn't give the answer either.
I searched the transcripts of the movies Aladdin, Mystery Men, and took the word of some guy who did it for the Whole Nine Yards and The Whole Ten Yards. That quote wasn't in any of them. My point is, if you think it's from a movie search for the transcript and you'll be able to look for it.
Since no one seems to know, this movie genius didn't know, and it isn't showing up on Google I'm going to go with that it isn't a quote from a movie or it's misquoted. Come on, you can find ANYTHING on Google. :)
What I'm going to go with is the only quote that is anywhere close to using the same words. It's from the 1987 Animated Film "The Brave Little Toaster". The film stars 5 household appliances (a lamp, an electric blanket, a radio, and a vacuum cleaner). The scene is as follows:
Air Conditioner: You guys really have an attachment for that kid, don't you?
Blanky: Yes. He was our master.
Air Conditioner: Well that's real nice, and anyday now, he might come romping back, huh? He'll just come whistling through that door, and everything will be the same. Real peachy-keen-like.
Blanky: Uh-huh.
Lampy: It's a possibility.
Toaster: Well, at least we try to be optimistic.
Air Conditioner: [shouts] Optimistic? Somebody try to untie the knot in this guy's cord!
Kirby: Why don't you just shut off?
Air Conditioner: Oh, I'm really scared there, Kirby. What are you going to do, suck me to death?
I can't seem to find anything else remotely close as this is...she probably just confused all the appliances and switched "suck" with "spoon". Hope that helps.
I honestly don't see why this debate has continued since November. How hard is it to rent the aforementioned flicks and watch them for the line? Either way, it sure has done wonders for my traffic numbers...
ReplyDeleteThey are going to talk about it and get it sorted on the radio this morning. There does seem to be a growing consensus that lots of movies (and a Friends episode) may have something very close to that line, but I will update accordingly.

Keep us updated on what you find out Tammi. You're right about the transcript...not all are online but a lot are. So, it might not answer the question but if you can find the movie transcript it will at least tell you what it's "not" from. From what I can tell it's not in any of these mentioned movies which is why people are still wondering where it's from.
ReplyDeleteI've heard about Friends too...if it's a conglomeration from a bunch of different sources then I think we're on to something! No more movie quotes...it's now what 3 movies are these combined quotes from?
